Preparing Your Pool for Summer: A Comprehensive Checklist

The Louisiana heat is already in full swing, and that means it’s time to get in the pool! With a little preparation, you can ensure your pool is clean, safe, and inviting for everything from block parties to quiet afternoons spent relaxing. Performing some simple pool maintenance will ensure that your pool is at the optimal conditions all summer long.

Remove and Store Winter Cover

If your pool was covered in winter, remove the cover, being careful to avoid getting debris into the pool as you remove it. Once off, clean the cover thoroughly and let it dry before storing it away. This prevents mold and mildew from forming on the cover during storage.

Clean Around the Pool

Clear any debris from around the pool area to prevent it from being tracked into the water. Sweep the pool deck and trim any overhanging branches that could drop leaves into the pool.

Perform Necessary Maintenance on Pool Equipment

Inspect your pool equipment, including the pump, filter, and heater, for any signs of damage or wear. Clean the equipment to remove any dirt or debris that might have accumulated. Replace or repair any damaged parts before you start up the system.

Adjust Water Level

Check the water level and adjust it if necessary. The water should be at the midpoint of the skimmer opening for optimal operation. Use a garden hose with a filter to top up the water level if it’s too low.

Test and Balance Water Chemistry

Maintaining your pool’s chemistry is a key maintenance point for guaranteeing clean, safe water. Use a pool test kit to check chlorine, pH, and total alkalinity levels. The readout should look something like this.

  • Chlorine: 1-3 ppm
  • pH: 7.2-7.6
  • Total Alkalinity: 80-120 ppm

Adjust the chemicals as needed to reach these levels.

If you have a saltwater pool, there are specific test kits designed for saltwater at local pool supply stores. The only difference in the actual readout should be the salinity, which should be between 3500-4000 ppm.

Shock the Pool

Add a pool shock treatment to eliminate any bacteria or contaminants that may have accumulated over the winter. Follow the instructions on the shock treatment package. It’s best to do this in the evening to avoid sunlight diminishing the chlorine’s effectiveness.

Run the Filter

After shocking the pool, run the filter continuously for at least 24 hours to circulate the water and help remove debris and contaminants. Backwash or clean the filter during this time to maintain its efficiency.

Brush and Vacuum

Brush the pool walls, floor, and steps to remove any algae or dirt. Follow up by vacuuming the pool to collect any debris that has settled to the bottom. If you have an automatic pool cleaner, this step can be made far easier!

Inspect Safety Features

Check all safety features, such as pool fences, gates, and alarms, to ensure they are in good working order. Perform any necessary pool maintenance to ensure the safety of all swimmers, especially children and pets, such as checking for loose stones, slippery surfaces, or damaged accessories like diving boards or slides.

Professional Inspection

Consider scheduling a professional pool inspection at the start of the season. A pool technician can identify potential issues that may not be apparent to the untrained eye, or solve problems that may be beyond your scope of capabilities.
